MEMF 2018

In 2018, our 19th season, the Madison Early Music Festival (MEMF) will present A Cabinet of Curiosities: Journey to Lübeck, exploring the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and how the changes in religion and 16th century printed materials, including music, changed the world.  MEMF will feature music from Northern Germany, including Italian and German sacred music from the recently discovered Choir Library at the Marienkirche (St. Mary’s Church) in Lübeck.

The musical history of the Marienkirche began in the 14th century, and by the late 1600s included a legacy of organists, including Franz Tunder and Dietrich Buxtehude. Buxtehude attracted musicians from all over Europe, including George Frideric Handel, Georg Phillipp Telemann, and Johann Sebastian Bach.

Join us from July 7-14, 2018, and experience a full week of music, history, and culture from Northern Germany, through classes, lectures, dances, and concerts taught and performed by some of the world’s finest early music performers and scholars.

In addition to a 6-event Festival Concert Series, lectures and workshops provide participants with opportunities to learn and practice instrumental and vocal skills, become familiar with historical performance practices and repertoire, learn about the featured music through the lenses of history and culture, and perform with other participants and faculty artists. Courses are offered for players and singers of all skill levels and advanced registration is required.
